Waxing is one of the most effective ways to achieve smooth, hair-free skin, but to get the best results and minimize discomfort, preparation is key. Whether you’re coming in for a bikini wax, Brazilian wax, or another service, a little pre-appointment care can make a big difference in your experience and results.
Read below and learn everything you should do before your waxing appointment so you can feel confident, comfortable, and ready for your session.
1. Let Your Hair Grow to the Right Length
For wax to grip effectively, your hair should be about ¼ inch long – roughly the length of a grain of rice. If it’s too short, the wax may not catch it; too long, and the process can be more uncomfortable. If needed, lightly trim beforehand, but avoid shaving.
2. Exfoliate 24–48 Hours Before
Gently exfoliating before your wax helps remove dead skin cells and allows the wax to adhere better to the hair rather than the skin. This can also help reduce the chance of ingrown hairs. Use a mild scrub or exfoliating mitt — avoid anything too harsh right before your appointment.
3. Avoid Lotions and Oils on the Day of Your Wax
Moisturizers, body oils, and creams can create a barrier that prevents wax from sticking properly. On the day of your appointment, come in with clean, dry skin for the best results.
4. Wear Comfortable, Loose Clothing
After waxing, your skin may be more sensitive. Loose-fitting cotton clothing helps avoid irritation and lets your skin breathe. If you’re getting a bikini or Brazilian wax, opt for breathable underwear to reduce friction afterward.
5. Manage Discomfort Proactively
If you’re concerned about sensitivity, you can take an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen about 30 minutes before your appointment (with your doctor’s approval). Avoid caffeine and alcohol beforehand, as these can increase skin sensitivity.
6. Schedule Around Special Events
If you’re waxing for a vacation or special occasion, book your appointment 1–3 days ahead. This gives your skin time to calm down before showing off your smooth results.
Communicate With Your Esthetician
Let your waxing person know if it’s your first time, if you have sensitive skin, or if you’re using any skincare treatments (like retinoids or acne medications) that could affect your skin’s sensitivity. A little preparation goes a long way toward making your waxing session smoother, faster, and more comfortable. At our Idaho-based waxing studio, we specialize in Brazilian, bikini, and full-body waxing for both men and women, with a focus on safety, comfort, and results.
